Bringing Bullet Journals to the Next Level

Over the last few weeks, I’ve had the amazing pleasure of getting to review the Scribbles that Matter notebooks. I also got to do a super fun comparison post of the Scribbles that Matter notebook with one of the other most popular notebooks in the bullet journal community to help you determine which notebook suits your needs best.

As Scribbles that Matter is a relatively new name on the notebook scene, I noticed that there wasn’t a lot of information about the background of the company. Getting to observe the helpfulness and generosity of the customer service team on both Facebook and Instagram, I was really interested in learning more about the brand and how they got started making notebooks.

Notebook creating is certainly not a common profession these days! I decided to reach out to the Scribbles that Matter team by email and see if they would be ever so kind to answer some questions about how they got to where they are today.

Not only did they respond quickly while they were launching a brand new customizable planner, but they were also considerate enough to let me share their answers with you!

Who is behind the scenes of STM?

Behind the scenes of Scribbles That Matter brand are geeky engineers that want to make stationery products people will not think twice about picking up. Our goal is to revive the interest of writing and creating in people so that they can understand and improve themselves.

That’s an amazing goal, and one well appreciated in the bullet journal community! I’d love to hear more about how you got to the point of starting this company.

What inspired you to create STM? Share the company’s history!

Scribbles That Matter started with an engineering student who used to work on his laptop during his Ph.D. study and scribble day to day (basically he was bullet journaling without even knowing about it).

At the end of his Ph.D. his laptop blew up and all his work was lost or that’s what he thought. Saddened and feeling lost he looked around his room only to find piles of notebooks, pieces of paper, sticky notes and sheets of printer paper with his scribbles he had amassed over the years. It was those scribbles that eventually saved him his Ph.D.

He thought to himself there needs to be a place where people could scribble their thoughts and keep them for years which would eventually become a notebook filled with scribbles that mattered.

I think that is absolutely astounding that you looked back on your journey to consider the tools that helped you along the way, even when technology failed you. Writing your journey on paper, whether it’s for personal or professional reasons, can have such a profound impact when it comes to documenting what is going on in your life.

How are your notebooks different than other common notebook brands?

Simple, we make the utmost effort to create the best product. Then, tell ourselves we are completely wrong and let our fans suggest how it can be improved further. Also, we never create something and consider it finished and sell it over decades. Every few months the same product keeps on improving iteratively, like a new version of Windows, iOS/Android etc.

It’s fabulous that you aren’t afraid of changing and modifying to meet the needs of those who buy your notebooks. Beyond the products, it’s very evident that you keep the people who buy your products most in mind.

That said, your customer service is like none other. You always desire to make products that meet the unique needs of your customers.

What is the most unusual product you’ve made to satisfy your fan base?

Thank you for praising the customer service team, we will make sure to send those monkeys some bananas ?? Unusual product….hmmm…one that comes to mind in the early days was a lady who asked us to make a “cubbie blue” version of our journal. We made it and named the color the same only to find out it was a very American thing and most of our fans around the globe didn’t get it. That color has now been discontinued.

This American has no idea what “cubbie blue” is! I still think it’s super admirable that you created a customized color option for a fan. I’m sure they were appreciative, and I hope they bought enough of that color to satisfy them for life!

Can you share any new products coming out in 2018?

Expect approximately 5 new products getting launched this year (if not more). But again, we don’t rush to the market to make a quick buck. We take out time, test things out and only if we fall in love with it ourselves (in a very unbiased way) do we finally introduce it to our fans.

Definitely looking forward to seeing what you release in 2018 and of course I will make sure to update my readers as you release them. I know from experience, my readers use all sorts of different notebooks across the spectrum when it comes to their own bullet journals.

Why should people use an STM notebook for their next bullet journal?

If someone has already used our journal then they know what it feels to use a Scribbles journal. For those who have not tried it yet, try it out and objectively two things can happen; one, you will become a fan for life or two; it won’t impress you and you get a full refund because that’s what we offer on all our products. That’s how confident we are.

Wow! I actually didn’t know you offered a refund if people do not like the product. I suspect that you must not get many requests because the notebook is truly a testament to improving your products.

What supplies are a necessity for your own bullet journal?

Personally, we are experimenting a lot ourselves. Journaling is a very personal yet flexible medium for one to be creative and free. Plus, our talented community motivates us to either go all minimalist style one day and then all doodling and colorful the next. We also switch things up intentionally to get in the frame of mind of our different customers and understand their pain-points so we can improve things for all our fans.

That’s awesome. I love how you don’t discriminate toward specific products and encourage the use of all kinds of pens, markers, and stationery. It’s true, your community spans a wide range of talent and ability, and I’ve seen astonishing creations made from many types of mediums.

On a personal note, I want to thank you for taking the time to answer these questions for both myself and the Planning Mindfully community as a whole! I’ve noticed that my readers truly appreciate the authenticity and honesty when it comes to product selections.

My conversation with the team solidified my love of the brand as a whole. It’s not every day that a popular company lets you understand the “method behind the madness”, so to speak. It’s been terrific learning about the team’s background and how it’s played into creating such an amazing product.

What I Learned from the Interview with Scribbles that Matter

1. You really cannot go wrong trying their products!!! They are so committed toward making a product that you love that they have no hesitation refunding your purchase if you are not satisfied or the notebook doesn’t meet your needs.
2. The brand is on this bullet journal journey along with their fans. This helps with developing strong relationships with their fan base.
3. The team truly believes in the importance of writing your thoughts down (not to mention how it saved their educational efforts!).

This interview with Scribbles that Matter made me even more of a fan of the brand (though I pretty much declared months ago I am a fan for life!). Yes, the product is awesome on its own!
